Why Do Earphones Keep Getting Bad?
Earphones, earbuds, headphones… whatever you call it! I am sick and tired of every single one of them. For the records I know that there are technical differences between headset, earbuds, in-ear headphones…etc. but out here in Nigeria we simply do not care. They are all the same thing- earphone or more aptly; earpiece (sue us). But grammar is not my focus today, I have bigger problems- I am just tired of spending my lean salary (boss, I am not complaining sir) on buying a new “original earpiece” every week. Check it out now; remove eight hundred naira from a man’s meagre salary (again, I am not complaining sir) and see what remains of it.
Wait, am I the only one that still buys 200 naira earphones? Well, I would take my time to explain why I resorted back to the 200 naira earpiece, sorry, earphone. I had a friend back then in school who used to sell earphones to me, he would come with two groups of earphones looking every bit the same, and somehow convince me that one was original while the other was fake. Every time he managed to make me cough up a few more hundreds of naira for the “original earpiece”, and every single time, I regretted my decision a few days later when one side stops working and the second follows a few days later.so I decided that I have had enough of it, I was going to invest money in an earphone and make sure I enjoyed it once in my lifetime. So I took my “last card”; the only money with me at the time and set out to get an earpiece. The man that sold to me went to the back of his shop and gave me a “rare” earphone and told me that he was baffled why people still buy those (200 naira) earphones when they can get these real ones for just 1500 and be assured of quality for at least a year. I was sold on the earphone as I counted the last money I had in the world and gave to him as I gleefully left the shop with the consolation that music would see me through the hungry times. Exactly a week after, I plugged in my earphones and got one of the biggest shocks of my life-it had stopped working! I am still having a fit of anger as I recall the kind of hunger that I had to endure for nothing sake at the time. So I decided there and since then to never pay more than 200 naira for an earpiece again.
What was I talking about? Ah! Yes! Earphones and why they don’t last. I did a quick poll to ascertain peoples view about earphones and these are some responses I got:
“fake earphones last for a month maximum while REAL FAKE last for two weeks maximum depending on usage” there is a real fake?
“Follow come lasts for a year” For our non-Nigerian readers, “follow-come” is our name for original accessories that accompanies products.
“I am tired of all earpiece! I just play music direct from my phone these days” this person is just copying me.
The three responses shows that I am not the only one with the earphone struggles. I know there is a company out there that is looking into making affordable and durable earphones for the masses but I don’t just know who they are yet. Like the second respondent rightly said, original accessories that come with phones and laptops last longer but in a situation where it gets bad what do we do next?
Maybe it’s just me and my friends that have this problem because nobody is finding a lasting solution to it. If you are with me or against me kindly let us know in the comment section below, and we would appreciate recommendations on how to get better earphones.
