Opinion: Do Women Really Know Their Phones?
I was in a gathering of male folks sometime ago and the discussion shifted to smartphones. My guys were having a fascinating discussion about a phone that had just been introduced to the market. Some of the terms they used were alien to my ear. They even went as far as checking the internet to confirm something one of them said about the phone. Having nothing to contribute, I watched in silence, waiting for the discussion to take the normal shift to other matters arising.
This little scenario is something girls are familiar with. Face it, majority of the ladies around know so little about their phones. Fine, we see a phone AD, we like it and we buy it. One of our friends buys a new phone, we take pictures with it, fall in love with the camera and our minds are set on buying the same phone. It is good to like things, want them, and get them but when we do not know the totality of what that thing does, we are bound to either misuse it or underuse it.
I once got a Sony VAIO laptop as a birthday present and for me, I was happy I finally got a laptop but many people, especially men who see the laptop with me never fail to gush and ask how much I got such a MACHINE. A man specifically told me to make sure I thank the person who got the laptop for me, every day because if I know how powerful that laptop is, I will protect it like a baby. I didn’t understand why they would gush at my laptop and overlook another person’s.
I asked a few ladies what they know about their phones and the responses I got further convinced me that lots of girls know just little about their phones. Some actually said they know everything about the phones except a few apps which they do not know how to use. I asked about the specifications of their phones and that was the end for all of them. They didn’t understand what I meant by specifications and even when I explained, they could not mention anything. For most of them, they are alright with the phone as long as they can make calls, receive calls, browse the internet and take pictures. They do not care about the specifications. The thing is, most ladies do not really care about the specifications of their phones. As long as the features they need (good camera, wifi, Bluetooth, music, games, browsers, etc) on the phone is there, they are good to go. They only want to get a phone for what it is or what it is worth and they are done. They do not have time to sit and analyze the specifications or what have you of the phone. Should this be regarded as a shame? Let’s not forget that not all men know so much about their phones either.
